Bubble-wrapped dog

It wasn’t until 1961 that someone discovered that bubble wrap was discovered to have fantastic protective packaging properties

Bubble wrap has long been one of the world’s most popular packing materials. It’s easy to see why – the individual air cushions provide protection for shipping or storing fragile, breakable goods, while also being easy to use. And who doesn’t find fun in popping the little bubbles when it’s reached the end of it’s life?

Wrapped Up in History

In 1957, engineers Alfred Fielding and Marc Chavannes sealed two shower curtains together, leaving a smattering of air bubbles between the two, and tried to sell the result as wallpaper. It wasn’t until 1961 that someone discovered that bubble wrap was discovered to have fantastic protective packaging properties. The very first commercial client to use bubble wrap as protective packaging was IBM – they wrapped the IBM 1401 computer in bubble wrap to protect it during shipment. In 1993, Fielding and Chavannes were inducted into the New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame.

Easily Available

Bubble wrap is very easy to find, and very easy to afford. Most packing supply stores and moving truck rental firms will have it available by the roll. You can also order it online in bulk from suppliers with e-commerce websites.

No More Pop?!

Either later this year or early 2016, Sealed Air Corp, the maker and patent-holder for Bubble Wrap, will be introducing a new version of its popular packaging solution. This new Bubble Wrap will be easier to ship to customers and easier to model to fit unique packaging problems, as it is delivered flat and inflated on-site using an air tube.

However, this new version of Bubble Wrap will not pop. Instead, pressure on one inflated area will simply transfer the air to another inflated area.

Don’t panic just yet – Sealed Air spokesman Ken Aurichio had already said that “It will not replace traditional Bubble Wrap as there will still be a consumer, retail and business market.”
