What is Rotomolding and How Does It Make My Transit Case Stronger?

Check out how your durable transit case is made!

Whether you’re carrying precious weaponry to a rugged military base, or housing expensive medical equipment, understanding the process in which transit cases are engineered will bring you peace of mind. Using the toughest polymer materials, your transit case is shock and vibration resistant, airtight, and waterproof. Created to withstand a vast array of weather environments, your freight is protected against the most dangerous elements. Specifically, the process of rotomolding is a cost-effective way to make large, joint-free polymer containers. In this week’s blog, we’ll dive into the rotomolding process and show you how it’s an effective method for improving transit case strength.

What Is A Rotomolding Machine?

The rotomolding machine is three separate arms which rotate around a vertical capstan. The molding tool is held in a cradle which is housed at the end of each arm. Motors rotate the molding tool at different speeds across two axes. There are three stations around each capstan. One is for loading and unloading, another is for heating and melting, and the last is for cooling. Rotating slowly, the gigantic rotomolding machine rotates the proper materials for your transit case through each capstan station. It is a cyclical process.

Melting And Cooling

The heating stage of your transit cases’ manufacturing process involves the presence of hot air blowing over the rotating tool and melting the internal polymer powder. This process builds up a polymer coating on internal surfaces. Once the entire inside is coated in tough polymer plastic, your transit case moves onto the cooling phase. The speed in which your product is cooled effects its final appearance and properties. The addition of cold water, to quickly cool down the recently melted polymer ensures your transit cases’ toughness.
