Product Information For Military Closed-Case Applications

ETHAFOAM* Brand Polyethylene Foam, M* Series

DESCRIPTION

In its second year of production and newly renamed, the original family of products. ETHAFOAM M1, ETHAFOAM M3, ETHAFOAM M4, and ETHAFOAM M5 (for "Grade A" applications) has been expended to include ETHAFOAM M1 AS and ETHAFOAM M3 AS (with integral anti-static agents for "Grade B" uses). All are designed specifically to match the cushioning and physical performance of traditional ETHAFOAM products and to contain less than 10% of the Lower Explosive Limit (0.1 LEL) of residual flammable gasses as specified for use in sealed cases. ETHAFOAM M-Series Products can be used in the many different cushion configurations of existing container designs without any expected change in shock or vibration protection. In addition, design criteria that have been developed over several decades, can be applied when designing new systems for protection. In addition, design criteria that have been developed over several decades can be applied when designing new systems for protecting sensitive items during shipping and storage.

PRODUCT FEATURES

ETHAFOAM M-Series Products are manufactured using a variation of Dow's unique RapidRelease process technology and preserve the time-tested overall performance of ETHAFOAM, the industry standard upon which the current Federal Specification PPP-C-1752 D was founded. Meeting the ETHAFOAM Standard means that these products can be relied on to satisfy the exacting military demands for long-term protection in military containers - even in ways not measured by the formal specifications.

The "M-Series" Products maintain features like resiliency, durability, light-weight, and resistance to creep under constant load, which have attracted military package designers to ETHAFOAM over the years. One of the most critical measures of performance is the ability of the material to provide predictable dynamic cushioning over a wide range of static loadings. Dynamic cushioning curves for "M-Series" Products are available by contacting API at the number listed below.

Special formulations, employment of the RapidRelease process, and use of a Dow-developed testing procedure combine to allow the lot-by-lot certification that the cells of "M-Series" Products contain less than 10% of the LEL of flammable gasses at the time of shipment. Thus, with a rather conservative margin of safety, the foam cannot create a flammable atmosphere in closed care applications.

AVAILABLE FROM API

A more subtle, but no less important, factor in foam performance is the ease with which it can be fabricated into the myriad of cushion shapes required. "M-Series" Products, which have the same physical characteristics as traditional ETHAFOAM products, can be fabricated by methods proven to produce finished parts that meet the military's stringent standards of dimensional accuracy. Fabricated parts are available through API. API employs an exclusive group of Professionals trained to provide a full range of services such as assistance in design, prototyping, estimating, and documentation to augment their capabilities for on-time production and shipment of quality parts.
