Thermoforming

Thermoforming is a great method for making the perfect case.

There are many different ways to create a custom case, whether that means using injection molding, rotational molding, or thermoforming. Thermoforming is an innovative process used by Advanced Packaging, Inc. that can transform plastics into the perfect custom case for your product. What exactly is thermoforming and how is it different from other methods of custom case manufacturing?

Thermoforming 101

Thermoforming is an incredibly cost-effective process that creates plastic from, well, sheets of plastic! The process works by forming the plastic into molds or shapes with the appropriate amounts of pressure and heat. If you are ordering a lot of custom cases or materials made using thermoforming, huge machines can work rapidly to make and trim thousands of plastic pieces per hour. Thermoforming is used to make parts for everything from custom cases to food service equipment. Plastics used include PVC (polyvinyl chloride), PET (polyethylene terephthalate), and RPET (recycled PET).

Types of Thermoformed Packaging

Thermoforming is primarily used to make two types of packaging:

  •         Clamshells: These are typically the custom cases produced using thermoforming. They are all-plastic and snap together or have buttons to love in place. Clamshells are often made from PVC.
  •         Trapped Blister Packaging: This type of packaging is designed to fit and house a wide variety of shapes and sizes of products safely and without shifting during transit.

Customization Options

Just like many of our cases, thermoforming makes an amazing final product that can be customized as little or as much as you’d like to meet your needs. You can add wheels or padlocks to the exterior for easy transport to trade shows or on airplanes. You can add a custom foam interior to ensure that products don’t shift or roll around during transit. You can even customize the color of the case to match your branding!
