How Well Do You Know Your Custom Case Vocabulary?

How Well Do You Know Your Custom Case Vocabulary?

When you have met with custom case engineers or shipment partners, have you often left the conversation feeling even more confused than when it started? If that sounds like you, it may be time to brush up on your custom case vocabulary.

In any specialized industry, understanding the lingo is the key to ensuring you are getting the best deals as well as the highest-quality products. When you have met with custom case engineers or shipment partners, have you often left the conversation feeling even more confused than when it started? What about when you go online for more information only to find yourself puzzled by all of the jargon? If that sounds like you, it may be time to brush up on your custom case vocabulary.

Shock Protection Foam

No matter what is contained in your custom cases, chances are you’ll need foam to protect it. Shock protection foam, also known as antistatic foam, is the first piece of custom case vocabulary we’ll examine. The foam guards your cargo against possible physical damages due to the shock of impacts or electrical exposure during transport. When delicate electronic devices or electronic integration is the purpose of your custom case, investing in shock protection foam is the smart choice.

Shock Protection Curves

How do you measure how well foam or other insulating materials safeguard your custom cases? You do this through the use of shock protection curves, our second piece of custom case vocabulary. Whether they are plastic or aluminum, your custom cases need to be able to withstand anything. The same expectation applies to your custom foam inserts and their G-force measurements.

G-Force Measurements

What will be placed in your custom cases? As we have noted, the foam interiors and protective exterior shells must be extensively tested. Another test is known as the G-Force or G-Factor test, and it measures how resilient the devices or electronic components held in your custom cases are before they begin to break.

Case Ratings

There are two primary scales for custom case ratings. The first rating scale is overseen by the organization known as Air Transport of America or ATA. Every custom case is given a different rating score based on how well they can survive multiple shipments along with the extra features or perks that they have.

The second scale relates to Ingress Protection or IP. For example, if a custom case has a rating of IP65, that number represents how well the case protects against dust and water infiltration.
